Drought Landscaping, also known as Xeriscape gardening, is the use of water-saving techniques in gardening. Drought landscaping uses several tools such as lawn reduction and planting of native trees, plants and shrubs which are drought tolerant and need less irrigation. Lawns can be replaced with ground covers that require low maintenance, beds of native plants or transformed with shrub borders. Patios, decks and walkways are often increased as another means of water conservation.
Water Conservation
Design is the key to xeriscape gardening where water-conservation is the ultimate goal. Slopes often prove to be difficult areas since they do not hold water well. Another consideration is soil as different types of soil respond in different ways to water retention. Compost-enriched soil often drains easier and retains soil more effectively. It also promotes more vigorous growth and a health plant is better able to survive drought and resist disease and pests.
